Driveline Lubrication

One of the most important preventive maintenance steps you can take to reduce driveline problems is to ensure that components are properly lubricated. Lack of lubrication is one of the leading causes of premature failure. Use the following recommendations when lubricating the driveline.

Lubricating Universal Joints

  • Check the driveline for looseness. If any loose components are found, service them as necessary.
  • Apply the specified grease at the “zerk” or grease fitting on the universal joint until new grease purges from all the seals.
  • If new grease does not purge at the seals, loosen the bearing cap bolts and continue to regrease the universal joint until all four cups purge. If new grease still does not purge, replace the universal joint.

Greasing the Slip Yoke and Splines

  • Check the driveline for looseness. If any loose components are found, service them as necessary.
  • Cover the air hole so that grease can flow easily to the seal. Apply the specified grease at the grease fitting on the slip yoke until new grease purges from the air hold in the end of the slip yoke.
